Bicycle racks: How to transport bicycles in the car? (Iunigo's Blog)

A few years ago, society started to become aware of sustainable mobility, and after the pandemic, this habit is here to stay. But, like any other means of transport, bicycles must comply with certain rules when being transported, and that is why today we are going to show you how to transport them correctly in the car.

During 2020, in Argentina, the sale of bicycles grew by 50% and nowadays, it is not strange to see entire families or cycling enthusiasts carrying their bicycles in the car to undertake different activities or circuits. Have you ever wondered what is the right way to transport them in the car? 

Rear Bike Rack

It is the chosen way of transportation for excellence and comfort, and although it is endorsed and there are approved products in Europe and the United States, in Argentina its use is not covered by Law 24.449 (National Traffic Law), since some of its articles refer to those elements that exceed the body of the car. Besides, it must be considered that this type of transfer may obstruct the view of the license plate and the rear lights of the car.

Trunk or inside the car

As we mentioned before, rear bike racks are not allowed, one of the allowed ways to transport your bike in our country is in the trunk or inside the car (some people usually lower the back of the seats). Many times, although we know it is cumbersome, it is necessary to disassemble the bikes to put them in the trunk. Most probably you will have to remove the wheels.

Roof Bike Racks

This is another of the correct ways to move a bicycle in Argentina. To do it correctly and avoid accidents, you must place a set of aluminum or steel bars with the corresponding support (bike rack). Before buying one, you will have to know your bicycle's tire size to choose the right support.  It is important to check that the bicycle is well fastened to the bike rack once it is placed on the roof of the car.

As we explained, these three ways of transportation are valid, but not all of them are correct. If you want to avoid infractions or a bad moment in a vehicle control, we recommend you not to use the rear bike racks.
